Why Don’t You Buy Yourself Some Supermarket Flowers…

Why don’t you do something nice for yourself?

I used to think I had to wait for an occasion to get flowers…..like Mother’s Day, my birthday or my wedding???  It wasn’t until the last few years that I realized that I can actually buy them for myself.  What an indulgent idea, buying flowers for yourself just because it is raining, springtime or it is simply a Tuesday.  The little bouquets that are available at the supermarket (or the farmers market) are so inexpensive and very good quality.  So while it may seem indulgent and luxurious to buy yourself some in season flowers, in actuality it is really quite the bargain.  A little pop of color dispersed throughout your home can bring you a little pop of happiness…..it is a very simple equation.

It is vital that when we buy the flowers that we are not intimidated by them.  I used to not buy them because I really did not know what to do with them….what are the rules???  I know there must be rules.  The truth is, there are no rules.  You bought them, you own them and you can do what ever you want with them.  Just buy the bunch you like and make sure you enjoy them…..it is ok that you are not a licensed florist,  nobody will know.

What has helped me feel less intimidated is to use smaller vases; especially vases (or jars or pitchers) with smaller openings, as this helps keep the stems together.  I am not very good at actually “arranging” bouquets.  But I am really good at cutting stems down, stripping the leaves and placing them into a smaller vase where they have more impact and look a lot more purposeful.  It also makes a cheap bunch of flowers from a supermarket look a lot more impressive. My preference is to have things to look a bit more haphazard and casual…that way they match my life.

These beauties give my rather dark entry table a bit of life and bring me a lot of joy.

The other option is to pick a little posy from your own garden (…or your neighbors, but I won’t tell). This is when it helps to have lots of little bud vases on hand.  I get these from the thrift store very inexpensively.  You can just as easily use little jars, silver sugar pots, milk jugs or candle holders….remember, there are no rules.  Flowers that in nature are already in little bunches are great to just plop into bud vases….just one or two and done!

Easy as pie…..

When you put a few vases of different heights and sizes together it makes a great impact. I used a couple of hydrangea stems and a few stems of geraniums, little flowers with big impact. Remember to have fun!

I hope I have inspired you to add a little flower power to your home too.
