The Perfect Drink…The Spritz Veneziano.

More commonly known as the Spritz Aperol……

This is very common in the North East region of Italy, where I happen to live. Lucky me!

There are so many reasons to love living in Italy.

There is so much to enjoy here. Such beautiful people, such delicious food and excellent wine.

One of my favorite parts of Italian culture is the Spirtz.  There are many types of spritzes, by definition it means a liqueur mixed with prosecco and some frizzante [sparkling water]. There is The Campari, the Cynar, the Hugo, but by far my favorite is the Aperol Spritz. With its bitter orange flavor, served over ice with a slice of orange as garnish….it makes a perfect pre-dinner cocktail.

The Italian culture is such that anytime after 11am (dare I even say 10:30am….no judgment here!) people can be seen sitting at an outdoor cafe sipping the delicious bright orange nectar. Heres the thing, the unassuming Italian cafe produces the most wonderful beverages at a very low cost. An Aperol spritz will set you back anywhere from 2 to 5 euro……what a bargain, and they throw in a few plates of snacks. I cannot think of a more wonderful way to pass the afternoon with a friend…after which you retire for a riposo pomeridiano……an Italian afternoon nap.

This glass of deliciousness cannot be any easier to make: It is a simple 3,,2,1 formula.

Italians usually serve it in a small glass with one ice cube (if you’re lucky) and a slice of orange.

I cannot help but break with tradition…..I like to supersize….I mean, seriously if I am going to all the trouble of popping the cork on the Prosecco bottle I may as well make it worth my while. So I choose a rather large wine glass.

Start by adding ice to the glass……I like lots because I like mine to be cold and refreshing…..most un-Italian of me, I know!!!

Fill a third of the wine glass with a Prosecco or a sparkling wine (which is what I had on this occasion) of your choosing.

Pour in two parts Aperol….

Then one part of the sparkling water….

And voila……3,2,1.

Garnish with a slice of orange and Enjoy!

Thanks for reading
