The Easy and Inexpensive Way To Wash Makeup Brushes

The Easy and Inexpensive Way To Wash Makeup Brushes

Ughhh! Don’t you hate that time of the month?

Makeup brush washing day…..is there another terrible time of the month?

I know I am probably supposed to do it more often, but I am so lazy about it that I would rather own too many makeup brushes than actually wash them more frequently. Honestly monthly is even pushing it for me

The amazing product I found to wash my makeup brushes.

I used to spend so much money on various makeup brush shampoo…..only to literally see it wash down the drain. Eventually I stumbled upon the beauty blender cleanser, which is a solid soap in a container and works amazingly, for $20, which I was willing to pay that much for because it is that good. But I figured I could dupe this product, it is just soap after all. So I just used a regular hand soap…..this turned out to be a bad idea, do not try this at home….think back to when you thought it would be a good idea to wash your Barbie Doll’s hair….Never a good idea!

One day, as I am making my way through the grocery store (In this case I was at a Lidl, and this is their own brand…but it is a product that is widely available everywhere); In the cleaning aisle I came across a product that I have seen many times but never purchased.OMDLaundry soapNever purchased because I am not all together sure what I would use it for. Until that fateful day, I spent 0.96 cents and bought a bar of laundry soap. This is a game changer.

I purchased from Amazon a very inexpensive rubber brush washing mat and brush drying rack.  They came as a set, and make this awful job so easy. One of the worst parts of brush washing in the past was having my hands wet and soapy for long periods of time. Now they barely get wet at all and I do not have to put my hands through an intensive moisturizing session afterwards. I have to say that with these three products I don’t all together dread that time of the month!

The first step is to gather all the dirty brushes and try not to look too closely at how dirty they are…..this is real life.  I work in my bathroom sink, as my sink has a nice flat bottom and the rubber mat sticks to it very well.  Kitchen sinks can be a great spot too. I place the soap and the mat at the bottom of the sink.

I fill up the sink about 1/2 to 1 inch of nice warm water, depending on the size of brushes I am cleaning first. I start with bigger fluffier face brushes which require more water.  Also I need to change out the water frequently as it can get pretty nasty pretty quickly….(see below)

Do not over fill the water so as to only wet the bristles, not the bezel. If water gets into the bezel it can compromise the attachment of the bristles to the handle and can really wreck your brush.  We do not want that….we like our makeup brushes.

From here the process is super easy:

  • Dip- into the water
  • Swipe- onto the soap surface
  • Swipe Again- this may only apply to my yucky brushes
  • Swish- onto the rubber mat
  • Rinse- under clean running water
  • Rest- place the brush on its side to drip dry
  • Dry- brushes should be dried with bristles down to avoid water running toward the handle.

OMD makeup brush cleaner

This laundry soap is so gentle on the makeup brushes while cleansing them very thoroughly.  It rinses very easily and does such a great job of cleaning brushes and also beauty sponges.

This is where I realized that the mat actually has sections specifically designed for certain brushes….what a bargain.

After I have rinsed the brush I leave it to drip by the side of the sink for a few minutes.  I might give it a little shake and if it needs reshaping I will do that too, before popping it into the drying rack.

If it is a nice and sunny day, put the brushes outside, they will be dry in no time.

This laundry soap product is such a great discovery, it is cheap and easy to get.  But most importantly it leaves the makeup brushes so soft and fluffy and a pleasure to use.
